The Met Office is an Executive Agency of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and is the UK’s internationally-renowned national meteorological service. We have been providing world-leading weather forecasts for more than 160 years and our public services and warnings are a part of everyday life for the people of Britain. The Met Office's leading-edge capabilities assist the UK and the international community in meeting the twin challenges of forecasting the weather and understanding and planning for a changing climate. We deliver a wide range of services and expert advice to both public and private sector organisations.
As a Met Office Operational Meteorologist and an Operational Meteorological Technician, you’ll work at the forefront of weather and climate science, interpreting real-time data, delivering meteorological services and supporting our Operational Meteorologists to advise our diverse customer group. You will be at the heart of the Met Office’s operations, using our state-of the-art technology and weather information to support our partners in Defence. Forecasting services are delivered to the MoD overseas sites from a number of local stations.
The Met Office on Ascension Island delivers a service primarily to support the British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI) mission; this consists of maritime, aviation and public sector style forecast services operating on a flexible basis, depending on the customer requirements. The role offers a great opportunity to work in a remote and challenging environment. You will also develop close working relationships with a range of customers and act as the focal point for the Met Office; representing the organisation and our values overseas.
We are initially looking for an Operational Meteorologist or an Operational Meteorological Technician to complete a six-month deployment to Ascension Island, with the possibility of being extended, based on individual preferences. Upon completion of this deployment, you will be placed in one of our defence stations to work as part of one of our high performing teams, embedded with our customers. Here you will experience a different style of forecasting to Ascension, and the opportunity to develop and expand your skills into different areas; the opportunities within Forecast Service Delivery and the Met Office are endless! If you are an Operational Meteorological Technician with the right level of educational qualifications, we will work with you to ensure you develop the skills to join our Operational Meteorologist Foundation Course in Autumn 2020.
Whilst in Ascension, we require an individual to be flexible in their approach to work. This is due to the limited operational capability of the runway; the logistics of moving people into and out of Ascension are currently particularly challenging, with flight schedules uncertain and frequently cancelled. There will be ample opportunities to focus on your own continued professional development and practice your skills.
Despite the island’s small size, there is never a dull moment in which you could find yourself bored; there is a very active social life, and the Met Office is strongly and integrally bound within that. Walking and wildlife are two of the islands main attractions, swimming in the sea is currently restricted, but there is a pool on the island, and a gym near the accommodation. Shopping facilities are basic, but there are a number of bars and restaurants, as well as an RAF run cinema. Accommodation is provided in ensuite rooms, with meals taken communally. A vehicle is provided for the team to use when on days off.
